Local Band Wanted for local music festival

Blackmore Sports & Social Club are putting on a one day music festival on Saturday the 12th July 2014. We have many bands booked so far, such as East of Java, a Johnny Cash tribute and U2. Actually maybe U2 is a small fib. What we are looking for is a very local band to fill one of the slots, possibly 45 mins to 75 mins depending on material. We won't lie, there is no money in it, just the opportunity to play to hundreds of people and gain local exposure. Our festival will start at 1pm and go though till late with approximately 11 acts performing over two stages, so if you want you be part of it, contact Andy andy@blackmoressc.co.uk

And now for "Something Wicked"

The Blackmore Players
Following on from the success of the musical, The Matchgirls, the players will be staging a comedy written and directed by Ian Lodge.

Tickets are now on sale and can be purchased by ringing our box office on 01277 200305.

We will be holding a read through of the comedy 'Something Wicked' on Wednesday 29th May and auditions will take place the following week on Wednesday 5th June. Both start at 8pm and will take place at Blackmore Village Hall.

Something Wicked
The Blackmore Players have decided that they will have another go at a Shakespeare play (after the success of Much Ado About Nothing). Their resident director, Malcolm, has manipulated the group into doing Macbeth which is not a popular decision with the remainder of the cast. As a web of lies and extra marital affairs unfolds the beleaguered cast start to discover that the legendary curse of "The Scottish Play" may not be a baseless myth after all!

WOW what a Blackmore Village Fayre weekend!

WOW what a Blackmore Village Fayre weekend!

Well the Fayre has come to an end, and what a great day it was. To sum it up, I asked Heather Eltham, the Blackmore Village Fayre Chairman(woman) to say a few words:

"On the Friday the heavens opened and our people arrived for the Variety show with their Brollies in hand to enjoy an afternoon of brilliant entertainment. Saturday morning was actually dry but a little chilly but the children all warmed up doing the various activities at The Festival of Sports - ending with team Daleks overpowering the Cybermen and the Weeping Angels.

As the crowds arrived onto The Green on Saturday evening - the Hog Roast was already slowly cooking for the Sunday rush of punters and the Young Farmers had fired up the BBQ and were doing a roaring trade. It was a brilliant evening of live music performed by Souled Out and dancing by the hundreds that attended - did anyone notice it was still dry?

Sunday morning - at 6.30am a band of merry people were already on the Green tidying up from the night before and arranging stalls ready for the afternoon. Committee members had to do a quick costume change to Men In Black and join in the Grand Parade along with ET, Dr Who's, Stars to name but a few and our very own Blackmore Dalek who devilishly sprayed the audience with water - who cared it was HOT and sunny !! People were entertained the whole afternoon by dancing, singing , Harlow Steel Band, karate exhibition, the Blackmore Players and the Committee Dance of an "alien nature". We had craft stalls, bouncy castles and ice cream, doughnuts, BBQ, Hog Roast and not to mention the Beer tent! Sunday evening in the Village Hall we held "Stars in their Eyes" a talent competition which was brilliant.

Monday morning saw the Pet Show, the children's cupcake competition and music provided by Cadenza. Another day in the sunshine browsing around the stalls, riding the zippy dipper or visiting the flower festival at the church (where the scarecrows had spent the night)! To end the Fayre was the traditional Bike Ride 1.5 hours of cycling around the closed circuit by about 160 people.

So much went on over this four day event .. our Blackmore village Fayre!"

This proves that people in and around the five parishes are constantly after more local information and news.

So now out to you guys. We need info too! So if you are putting on an event or have some news, please contact me with the details andy@blackmorevillage.com

Village Fayre is finally here

Well the fayre is upon us at long last. A big thank you to all the committee members that have worked so hard to make this fayre possible.

For those that have not received a fayre programme, a schedule of events is below, click to enlarge.

New Brasserie for Blackmore

The trend for "pop up" restaurants is all the rage at the moment and it's great when you get the news that one is opening up in Blackmore, at the Prince Albert to be precise.

The man behind the idea is named Lawrie and had this to say "I have been considering opening a new restaurant in the Brentwood area and after some research decided upon Blackmore as the ideal location.

Luckily, I have moved into the Prince Albert pub and will open on Friday evening, 24th May. I think the locals should find the concept interesting, the menu is based on local, sustainable produce, where possible, using cuts of meat such as lamb breast, pork cheeks, sweetbreads etc. rather than the usual scampi and rump steak offered by most pubs.

The wine list is interesting too, we have a close association with Drinks of France who supply about 70% of our wine list from small, exclusive vineyards in France. Initially we will open on Friday through Sunday (bank holiday Monday also) and depending on demand will look at extending our hours of business. Each month we will be holding a 'wine and Dine' evening"

Well we certainly wish Lawrie the nest of luck in his venture, I for one will be trying his Brasserie out, and will report back very soon on these pages.

Motorcycles on the green?

On the 12th May the 18th annual British owners club Veteran and Vintage Motorcycle Meet will take place on the village green and outside Megarrys antique shop.

Last year there were about 300 classic vintage and veteran motorbikes during the course of the day giving visitors a chance to admire these amazing machines. So why not pop down, take a look and grab a coffee from Megarrys.

Save the Bull update

IMPORTANT UPDATE – THE BULL - PLANNING APPLICATIONS

The proposals are for two small semi-detached houses to be built in the Bull Garden fronting The Green, together with a four car carport to the rear, and gardens, all surrounded by a 6 foot high brick wall. To allow access to the carport and house garden, and keep some parking for the Bull, the pub cellar and far outbuildings would be demolished.

If these applications are successful the results would be:

  • The loss of yet another feature of the Medieval Heart of our village, which is a designated Conservation Area.
  • Our historic Village Green and its existing surroundings have to be protected otherwise they will be nibbled away until nothing is left. • Blackmore will then become just another place on the map; like so much else, a victim of contemporary apathy and greed.
  • The Bull is a Grade II listed building, most of which is over 500 years old.
  • It is thought that it was originally built by the Priory as a hostelry for pilgrims passing through Blackmore.
  • The loss of the cellar and the existing garden would sound the death knell of its long career as a public house. The last professional publican estimates that the garden trade was worth 20% of the pub’s business.

Our Parish Council has objected to this proposal in the strongest terms to the Brentwood Planning Department, supported by evidence from their own resources and from us the parishioners.

Be aware that the Parish Council has only advisory power, the decision will be made by the Brentwood Council on advice from the planning officers.

The planning officers are obliged, in addition to giving advice, to report to the Council on the nature and extent of the objections they have received.

STOP THIS VANDALISM

ACT NOW BEFORE 9TH MAY 2013

Write or e-mail, you do not have to live in Blackmore, setting out your objections to:

Bra-vissima Ladies Choir in Concert

Friends of St Laurence are presenting an evening concert by Bra-vissima ladies choir, here's what they have to say:

"We have been very lucky to have Bra-vissima Ladies Choir volunteer to support our work. Bra-vissima were founded in 2007 and are Brentwood based. They have a broad repertoire including classical works, songs from the shows and modern popular music. They have performed in Chelmsford Cathedral and at the Essex Festival Choral Concert.

We are very excited about this concert as Bra-vissima will be the first ladies choir we have hosted and are sure they will give their male counterparts a good run for their money. This means we shall all have a smashing evenings entertainment."

The concert will be held on Saturday 16th March 2013 at 7.30pm (doors open at 7.00pm) in the Priory Church of St Laurence, Church Street, Blackmore CM4 0RN. Tickets: £10 from 01277 823959

The Village Fayre committee need you!

It's the village fayre this year... yay! And the guys need as much help as possible, I should know, i'm on the committee. We are a great bunch of friendly people who have the most fun organising the fayre, so...

If you would like to do your bit to make this fayre the best yet, please contact Heather Eltham on 01277 821 824 or at elthams@btinternet.com. Whether to help out during the Fayre weekend or contribute to the Programme, and as always, we are looking for people or organisations to sponsor events, make a donation or run a stall on the Village Green.

Programme: we will be distributing the Blackmore Village Fayre Programmes several weeks ahead of the fayre. If you wish to contribute to the Programme, your assistance would be very much appreciated.

Stall Management: there are many stalls at the Fayre which are managed by the Committee but we require people to help man them. If you are able to spare just a couple of hours, please join a team of volunteers to run a stall. Family groups or friends make ideal teams as many hands make light work.

Set Up & Dismantle: if you are an early bird, then we need you to help set up on the Green. Ditto clearing up and breaking own at the end of the day.
